A finish decision is harder than a layout decision, because a layout is either right or wrong and a finish has to keep being right for fifteen years. It has to work with your floors, your light, and the way your household actually treats a kitchen.

How to Choose a Finish
Four questions that settle it faster than looking at more samples.
Where the Light Falls
A stain that reads warm under showroom halogen can read orange in a north-facing kitchen. Take samples home and look at them at breakfast and again at dinner.

Small children, big dogs, and heavy cooking all point away from high-gloss and toward textured or matt surfaces that forgive fingerprints.
